Royal London Life Insurance

Royal London's advised life cover, its Personal Menu Plan, is sold only through advisers. It pays out if you die or are diagnosed with a terminal illness, and every plan includes Helping Hand support that you can use without ever making a claim.

▶ In plain English. What is Royal London life insurance?

Royal London's Menu Plan is one plan you build from parts. You start with life cover, then add critical illness, income protection or life or critical illness cover on the same plan. It is only available through a financial adviser. Royal London is a mutual, so it has no shareholders and puts profits back into products and customers rather than paying dividends out.

You cannot buy it yourself online, and it has no cash-in value. Stop paying and the cover ends with nothing back.

What is Royal London advised life cover?

Advised life cover, which Royal London also calls its Personal Menu Plan, pays a sum of money if you die or become terminally ill during the plan term. The money is not earmarked, so your family can use it to clear a mortgage, replace your income or cover school costs.

The payout can be a lump sum or an income. You choose whether the cover increases, decreases or stays level over the term. In many cases you are covered as soon as you submit the completed application with your payment details, which closes the gap most people never think about.

You can apply if you are a UK resident aged between 18 and 88. Plans start from £5 per month. You answer medical questions and may need a medical before cover starts. There is no cash-in value at any time, and if you stop paying, the cover ends and you get nothing back.

That means we arrange cover with the insurer that fits your health, budget and circumstances, not one we are tied to.

Helping Hand, included with every advised plan

Helping Hand is the part clients actually use. You do not need to make a claim to access it, and it covers your partner and children as well.

A dedicated RedArc nurse

For serious physical injury, mental illness, disability or bereavement. The nurse tailors support for as long as you need it, and can arrange counselling, second medical opinions, home care or mobility equipment. Support is available even before a condition is diagnosed.

24/7 GP access

Video, phone or message consultations through HealthHero, useful when your own surgery cannot fit you in.

Mental wellbeing app

Thrive gives recommendations to help prevent, detect and manage common mental health conditions.

Physiotherapy advice

TrackActiveMe helps identify a physical injury and gives you personalised exercises to support recovery.

Personalised health report

LiveSmart reports on your nutrition, fitness, sleep, mental wellbeing and brain function.

Legal, career and medical helplines

Independent professionals for employment rights, wills and probate, or getting back into work after a health change or redundancy.

Important: Helping Hand services are provided by third parties who are not regulated by the FCA or the PRA. They are not part of the policy terms and do not form part of your insurance contract, so Royal London can change or withdraw them. Choose the plan for the cover it provides, not for the extras. Who Royal London tends to suit, and who it does not

Royal London tends to suit families who will use its support services.

Families who want support before a claim

Helping Hand is available from day one and extends to your partner and children. If someone in the household is likely to need a nurse, a therapist or a second opinion, that has real value now, not only after a diagnosis.

People buying several covers at once

The menu structure puts life, critical illness and income protection on one plan, which keeps the admin and the plan fee in one place.

Not the right fit

If you want to buy online without an adviser, or you are over 88, this is not available to you. If you want any cash value at the end, this plan has none, and never will.

Common questions

Can I buy Royal London life insurance without an adviser?
Not this plan. Advised life cover, the Personal Menu Plan, is only available through a financial adviser. Royal London sells other products directly, but the menu plan and its options are adviser only.
What ages can apply?
UK residents aged between 18 and 88 can apply for advised life cover.
Do I have to claim to use Helping Hand?
No. Helping Hand is available as soon as your cover starts, and it covers your partner and children. It is not part of your insurance contract, so Royal London can amend or withdraw it.
What does being a mutual change for me?
Royal London has no shareholders, so profits are reinvested in products and customers rather than paid out as dividends. It is a structural difference, not a guarantee of a lower premium, so still compare the price.
What happens if I stop paying?
Your cover ends and you get nothing back. There is no cash-in value at any time. If a payment is five weeks overdue Royal London cancels the plan, and restarting it may require you to disclose any change in health, occupation or leisure activities.

Protecting the mortgage is the part we advise on ourselves. Read how mortgage protection insurance works, including which type of cover suits which situation.
