How to protect your mortgage if you lose your job
26 August 2026

Most people assume income protection covers redundancy. It usually does not. That gap is worth understanding before you need it.
Does mortgage protection cover redundancy?
Income protection is designed for illness and injury. It pays when you cannot work.
Redundancy is different. You can work. There is no job.
Standard income protection does not pay in that situation, and people find this out at the worst possible moment.
If redundancy is your main worry, income protection is not the product that answers it.
What pays your mortgage if you are made redundant
Unemployment cover is the product built for this. It is often sold as accident, sickness and unemployment cover, shortened to ASU.
It pays a monthly amount for a limited period while you look for work.
Some lenders and brokers offer it as mortgage payment protection, which does the same job but is sized to your mortgage payment rather than your income.
Both are real products and both have real restrictions.
The limits of redundancy cover
There is almost always an exclusion period at the start. Buy it today and you typically cannot claim for redundancy for the first few months.
That exists to stop people buying cover when they already know the news is coming.
The payout runs for a limited time, commonly twelve months, not until you find work.
You usually cannot claim if you knew redundancy was likely when you applied, if you resign, or if you are on a short fixed term contract.
So it buys you breathing room. It does not replace an income indefinitely, and it is not a substitute for savings.
If illness stops you working
This is where income protection earns its place, and it is the stronger product of the two.
It pays a monthly benefit while you are unable to work through illness or injury, often up to retirement if the policy allows.
You choose a waiting period before it starts. A longer wait costs less, so match it to how long your sick pay and savings would last.
Check whether the definition is own occupation. That means it pays if you cannot do your own job, not any job at all. It is the definition worth having.
Mortgage protection types compared
If money is limited, this is the order that protects the most for the least.
First, cover that clears the mortgage if you die. It stops the house being sold.
Second, income protection for long term illness.
Third, critical illness cover if there is budget left, because it pays a lump sum on diagnosis rather than a monthly income.
Unemployment cover comes after those, because it pays for the shortest time and has the most conditions attached.
That order will not suit everyone. A contractor with no sick pay has a different set of risks to an employee with six months full pay.
Check broadband before you make an offer
Broadband speeds can vary street by street, so check the exact address before you commit. Ofcom's free checker shows which broadband speeds and mobile coverage are available at any UK property.

Frequently asked questions
Does income protection cover redundancy?
Standard income protection does not. It covers being unable to work through illness or injury. Redundancy needs unemployment cover, often sold as accident, sickness and unemployment.
How long does unemployment cover pay for?
Commonly twelve months, though it varies. It is designed to buy time rather than replace an income permanently.
Can I buy it once redundancy is announced?
No. There is an exclusion period at the start, and policies usually exclude claims where you had reason to expect redundancy when you applied.
What is own occupation cover?
It means the policy pays if you cannot do your own job, rather than any job you could reasonably do. It is the stronger definition and worth asking for.
Should I get income protection or critical illness first?
Which comes first depends on your budget and circumstances.
Is mortgage payment protection the same thing?
It is similar. It is sized to your monthly mortgage payment rather than your wider income, so it covers less but usually costs less too.
