Critical illness cover explained
26 August 2026

Critical illness cover pays out on diagnosis, while you are still alive. The catch is that the list of conditions is the product.
What is critical illness cover?
Critical illness cover pays a tax free lump sum if you are diagnosed with one of the conditions your policy lists.
It pays while you are alive. That is the difference between it and life insurance.
People use it to clear a mortgage, to pay for adaptations at home, or to stop working for a year without losing the house.
It is usually bought alongside life cover rather than instead of it.
Which conditions critical illness cover pays out for
Every insurer publishes a list of covered conditions. The list is not the same between insurers, and that is where the real difference sits.
Policies differ widely in how many conditions they list.
More conditions is not automatically better. What matters is how the common ones are defined, because cancer, heart attack and stroke make up the large majority of all claims.
So compare the wording on those three before you compare the length of the list.
Where critical illness claims catch people out
Most policies pay in full only if the condition meets a defined severity.
Some cancers, for example, are covered at a reduced percentage rather than the full sum. Early stage prostate cancer is the one that comes up most.
The same applies to heart conditions where the policy sets out how much heart muscle damage counts.
This is not an insurer being difficult. It is written into the policy from day one, which is why reading the definitions matters more than reading the marketing.
If a partial payment is made, many policies leave the rest of the cover in place. Check whether yours does.
Children's critical illness cover
Many policies now include cover for your children at no extra premium.
The amounts are smaller, often a fixed sum or a percentage of your own cover up to a cap.
It is not there to replace an income. It is there so a parent can stop working during treatment without worrying about the mortgage.
Check the age range and whether it continues if the child is in full time education.
Critical illness cover or income protection?
If you can only afford one, this is the honest comparison.
Income protection pays a monthly amount for as long as you cannot work, potentially for years. Critical illness pays once, then the cover ends.
Being unable to work through illness is more likely than being diagnosed with a listed critical illness.
On that basis income protection usually protects more people, more of the time, for less money.
Critical illness earns its place when you want a lump sum to clear debt rather than a monthly income to live on.
Plenty of people hold both. Which comes first depends on your sick pay, your savings and your debts.
Check broadband before you make an offer
Broadband speeds can vary street by street, so check the exact address before you commit. Ofcom's free checker shows which broadband speeds and mobile coverage are available at any UK property.

Frequently asked questions
Does critical illness cover pay out for any serious illness?
No. It pays only for the conditions your policy lists, and only where the diagnosis meets the definition written in the policy. That is why the wording matters more than the number of conditions.
How many conditions should a policy cover?
There is no magic number. A comprehensive policy may list over 100, but cancer was 62% of critical illness claims paid in 2024 (ABI), so the definitions of the common conditions matter most.
Will it pay the full amount every time?
Not always. Some conditions, particularly certain early stage cancers, pay a reduced percentage. Many policies leave the remaining cover in force after a partial payment.
Is my children's cover included?
Often yes, at no extra premium, but for smaller amounts and within a set age range. Check whether it extends through full time education.
Can I have it alongside life insurance?
Yes, and it is common. It can be a combined policy that pays once on the first event, or two separate policies that can each pay. The combined version is cheaper but pays only once.
Should I get income protection first?
It depends on your sick pay, savings and debts. Income protection keeps paying while you cannot work, whereas critical illness cover pays once.
