A Simple Guide to Protecting Your Family
Building a financial wall around your loved ones
Life insurance and protection can feel complicated. This free, plain-English guide explains the main types of cover, what they do and the questions worth asking.
What the guide covers
Five types of cover, one page each. Each page says what it pays, what the money is usually used for, and what it does not do.
-
Life Insurance and trusts
Pays a lump sum if you die during the policy term. Families use it to clear a mortgage and cover the years that follow. A trust decides who receives that money and how quickly, so it does not wait for probate.

Family Income Benefit
Pays your family a monthly amount instead of one lump sum if you die during the term. It usually costs less than comparable life cover, because the payments stop on a date you set.
Family income benefit -
Critical Illness Cover
Pays a lump sum if you are diagnosed with a covered illness and meet the policy definition. Cancer, heart attack and stroke are commonly included. The definition in the policy decides the claim, not the diagnosis alone.
Critical illness cover -
Income Protection
Pays you a regular income if illness or injury stops you working. Think of it as your own sick pay. You choose how long you wait before it starts and how long a claim can run.

Relevant Life Cover
Life cover a limited company arranges and pays for on behalf of a director or employee. It is normally written in trust, so the money goes to the people that person chooses.

What else is inside
The guide is not only a product list. It also covers the decisions around the cover.
- Looking after your family. Why protection is really about the people who depend on your income.
- What would your family need if life changed? The questions to work through before you look at any policy.
- The risk of doing it yourself. What an online application can miss, and what that costs at claim time.
