Protection insurance questions answered

What is protection insurance?
Protection insurance is a broad category covering policies that pay out if you die, become seriously ill, or cannot work. The main types are life insurance, critical illness cover, income protection, family income benefit, and mortgage protection. Each product works differently and suits different needs — many families benefit from a combination.
How much does protection insurance cost?
The cost depends on the type of cover, the amount insured, the policy term, your age, and your health. Life insurance for a healthy non-smoker in their 30s can cost as little as a few pounds a month. We search the whole market to find the most competitive premium for your specific circumstances.
Do I need more than one type of protection?
Most families benefit from more than one product. A common combination is life insurance or mortgage protection (to clear the mortgage), family income benefit (to replace the salary), and critical illness cover (for a lump sum on diagnosis of a serious illness). We help you build a plan that covers the right risks without overpaying.
What is the difference between life insurance and critical illness cover?
Life insurance pays out when you die. Critical illness cover pays out when you are diagnosed with a specified serious illness — such as cancer, a heart attack, or a stroke — while you are still alive. Both pay a lump sum, but they cover different risks. Many families have both.
Is protection insurance regulated?
Yes. Protection insurance advice in the UK is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). That’s Family Finance is a trading style of RB Ame Ltd, authorised and regulated by the FCA (No. 1038034). You can verify our registration on the FCA register.
Do I need to put my life insurance in trust?
Not legally — but it is strongly recommended. Without a trust, the payout forms part of your estate, which means it could be subject to inheritance tax and delayed by probate (which currently takes an average of nine to twelve months). A trust bypasses both. We include free trust guidance with every policy we arrange.
