What critical illness cover actually covers

Insurers pay on definitions, not on the number of conditions a comparison site counts. That gap is where declined claims come from.

The short answer

Cancer, heart attack and stroke make up the large majority of critical illness claims. Each condition carries a severity definition that must be met, so the wording of the top three matters far more than how many conditions are listed. Most policies also cover your children at no extra premium.

65% (ABI, 2025)Share of claims that are cancer
DefinitionsWhat decides a claim, not the list length
IncludedChildren's cover on most policies
Non-disclosureA common reason claims are declined

The conditions that make up most claims

Insurers publish their claims data. Three conditions dominate almost every insurer's figures.

Condition Roughly what share of claims Note
Cancer Around 65% Subject to a severity definition, not every diagnosis
Heart attack Around 10% Must meet a defined severity
Stroke Around 8% Must cause permanent symptoms in most definitions
Everything else The remainder Multiple sclerosis, organ failure and many others

Typical UK industry proportions. Every insurer publishes its own claims statistics, and you can ask for them.

A policy listing 90 conditions is mostly listing the tail. What matters is how the top three are defined.

Definitions decide claims, not lists

  • Cancer definitions usually exclude early stage and non-invasive types
  • Heart attack definitions require specific measured evidence
  • Stroke definitions usually require symptoms lasting beyond a set period
  • Some conditions pay a partial amount rather than the full sum
  • Severity-based policies pay a percentage matched to how serious the diagnosis is

Ask for the policy summary and read the top three definitions before you compare prices. That is the whole comparison.

What a claim is typically for

Insurers publish average claim sizes. The figures are large enough to change a family's options and smaller than most people expect.

Cover Typical claim amount What it usually pays for
Critical illness Around £67,000 Clearing or reducing a mortgage, time off work, adaptations
Life cover The mortgage, and a period of replaced income
Income protection Around £10,700 Monthly bills while you are unable to work

Illustrative industry averages rather than a promise. Your own claim would be whatever sum you insured.

Children's cover is usually included

Most critical illness policies cover your children at no extra premium, up to a capped sum and between set ages.

It is one of the least known features and one of the most used. For many families it is the reason to take critical illness cover rather than the alternative.

Terms differ. Some include the child from birth, some from a few weeks old. Some cover a child up to 18, some to 22 in full-time education.

Why claims get declined

Non-disclosureA common cause. Something on the application was left out, and the insurer finds it at claim. Full disclosure is the whole defence.
The definition was not metA real diagnosis that does not meet the policy wording. Reading the definitions before you buy prevents most of this.
An exclusion appliedA condition specifically excluded at underwriting, usually because of your medical history. It should be in the policy schedule.
The policy had lapsedA missed premium and no contact. Insurers usually give a grace period, but not an unlimited one.

Where you stand

This cover suits you if
  • Clearing the mortgage outright is the priority
  • You want children's cover included
  • Your employer sick pay is generous and long
  • You have savings that would bridge several months
Income protection may fit better if
  • You are self-employed with no sick pay
  • Your main worry is being unable to work at all
  • Mental health or musculoskeletal problems concern you
  • You need income rather than a single lump sum

Check broadband before you make an offer

Broadband speeds can vary street by street, so check the exact address before you commit. Ofcom's free checker shows which broadband speeds and mobile coverage are available at any UK property.

Want all your bills in one?

We can introduce you to a specialist who can combine your mobile, broadband and utilities into one bill. There's no fee for the introduction.

We don't provide these services ourselves. Switching household bills is not a regulated financial service, so FCA protections and the Financial Ombudsman do not apply. We'll only pass your details to the specialist if you ask us to. See our privacy notice.

Questions people actually ask

What does critical illness cover actually cover?
A list of defined conditions, with cancer, heart attack and stroke making up most claims. Each condition has a severity definition that must be met, so a diagnosis alone is not always enough.
How many conditions should a policy cover?
The count matters less than the definitions of the main three. A shorter list with fairer wording can pay more reliably than a long list with strict wording.
Are children covered?
Many policies include children's critical illness cover at no extra cost, up to a capped amount and between set ages. Check the ages and the sum, because they vary.
Does critical illness cover mental health conditions?
Generally no. Income protection covers mental health conditions that stop you working, which is a significant practical difference between the two.
Why do critical illness claims get declined?
Commonly because something was not disclosed on the application, or because a diagnosis does not meet the policy definition.
How do I check broadband speed at a property?
Use Ofcom's free broadband and mobile checker at checker.ofcom.org.uk. Enter the property's postcode and choose the address to see which broadband speeds and mobile coverage are available before you make an offer.
