Financial adviser, protection

Ben Tomlin

I advise families on life cover, critical illness cover and income protection. I also built and sold a training company, and served as a firefighter while running it.

The short version

I advise on protection. Life cover, critical illness cover and income protection, built around what your household actually needs rather than read off a script.

That is what my FCA permissions cover, and it is what I do myself rather than pass on.

2017Passed CeMAP, where the advice career started
2010 to 2019Built UK Sports Training with no debt, sold it to a PLC
Level 4 IQALed and passed Ofsted and awarding-body audits
Directly authorisedWe hold our own FCA permissions, not somebody else's

What I can advise on, and what I cannot

Worth being exact about this, because plenty of firms are vague.

I advise on these myself

  • Life cover
  • Critical illness cover
  • Income protection
  • Family income benefit
  • Mortgage protection

We introduce you for these

  • Mortgages
  • Pensions
  • Investments
  • Equity release
  • Wills and estate planning

You are told who the firm is before anything is passed on. I hold the equity release qualification so the introduction comes from someone who understands it.

How I got here

  1. Built a training company from nothing

UK Sports Training, incorporated 2010, started with no outside money and no debt. Sold to a PLC in 2019, the year it won Best Training Provider in London and the South East.

  2. Served as a firefighter

Alongside running the business. Shift work and a company do not leave much spare time, which is where the habit of getting things done properly came from.

  3. Passed CeMAP in 2017

Then CeRER and DipFA. The advice career started here.

  4. Set up That's Family Finance in 2019

The same year the training business sold.

  5. Went directly authorised

The firm now holds its own FCA permissions under reference 1055079, rather than operating under another firm's.

Why a quality assurance background matters to you

I held Level 4 Internal Quality Assurance and led Ofsted and awarding-body audits. We delivered into colleges and private providers rated Good or Outstanding, including Havering Adult College.

Audit work teaches you that the file has to stand up when somebody independent reads it. That is the same standard a protection recommendation has to meet.

Why we went directly authorised

Operating under another firm's permissions means their rules, their panel and their timescales. Holding our own means the advice, the process and the responsibility sit here.

It is more work and more scrutiny. It is also the reason there is nobody in between when something needs sorting.
